Richard Allen Becher, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away at home in Alamo, Ca. on March 1, 2019 after a brave fight against pancreatic cancer. Friends and family always considered him to be very loving, humble, caring and witty. He lived his life based on loyalty, humor and action.
Dick was born to Josephine Stovick and William Becher on March 7, 1939. He grew up in Hastings, Nebraska with his siblings and extended family members. Dick lettered in baseball, football, basketball and tennis in high school. He was awarded the Dwight Thomas Award for sportsmanship and scholarship in 1957. In 2017 he was inducted into the Hastings High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Dick was fortunate to receive a baseball scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska. Dick, a member of ATO fraternity, was a proud Cornhusker! He continued his love of competing in sports. Many friends quickly acknowledge his enthusiasm for tennis and golf. He was lucky enough to play golf all over the world, but his favorite home courses and teammates were always found at Waverly, Rancho La Quinta, and Round Hill Country Clubs. He scored three holes-in-one!
After serving in the Air Force Reserves, he had a successful career in technology sales, beginning at IBM and then moving to several start up companies in the Northwest. Later in life he found great joy in working with his family to support numerous philanthropic projects.
Dick is survived by Dody Jernstedt, his loving wife of 25 years; his children--Amy Becher Gish, John Becher, Jaci Jernstedt, Derek Jernstedt (wife Jennifer); and six beautiful grandchildren--Allie, Samantha, Emily, Gaby, Jake and Avery…and his yellow lab, Willie. He was very fond of his extended family which included his nephews, nieces, and their families.
A celebration of life is planned for 4:00 Friday, March 22, at the Community Presbyterian Church, 222 W. El Pintado, Danville, CA 94526.
Recently Dick established the Dick Becher Baseball Scholarship at the University of Nebraska. He thought it was important to provide others the same opportunity he had to obtain a college education. Dick’s wish was that any memorial gifts be designated to:
