Mary Wohlers, the oldest daughter of James and Patricia Donovan was raised in Emeryville California. James and Patricia had larger than life personalities that would shape the lives of their three daughters and all eight of their grandchildren. Just this month a great grandson, James Skuce, was born. This fact brought joy to Mary’s heart in her final days.
Mary was introduced to Ronald Wohlers on a blind date. He would become the love of her life. They wed on October 6, 1962 and went on to have three children. Ronald worked as a telecommunications engineer for AT&T leaving Mary with the primary responsibility of raising the children. The family lived in El Cerrito and enjoyed summer vacations at Santa Cruz and Lake Tahoe. Mary was always involved in the activities of her children including the Boy Scouts, PTA, and the various school bands that her children were in. She created the Mira Vista Elementary “Fun Fair” which was an annual event to raise money for the school that the students very much enjoyed. In 1986 the family moved to San Ramon.
Over the years Mary worked in several positions and volunteered her time with different organizations. Her personality could brighten any room and she made many lasting friendships in the places where she worked and volunteered. She worked at Louis stores, a bank, and the Marriott at San Ramon. Mary was beloved as the “lunch lady” at Mira Vista Elementary and later she would work at the food services main office. She volunteered with Helping Hands, and The San Ramon Historic Foundation. Mary was active at Saint David’s and Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Churches.
Mary is survived by her sisters, Kathy Caporrici and Sharon Skuce; her children Philip Wohlers and his wife Joanne, Robert Wohlers and his wife Kelly, and Ronda Matthews and her husband Scott; and her grand-children Mara and Owen Matthews. She was a loving mother and grand-mother. Her commitment to her children and grand-children only grew stronger over the years. She will be deeply missed by those who knew her.
