Mr. Isagani “Pugaobaby” Abatayo Pugao, son of the late Baldomero Pugao and Dionisia Abatayo, was born June 1, 1945 in Cebu City, Philippines. He attended the public schools of Guevara Elementary School and Jose Abad Santos High School. He aspired to be a doctor and started studying medicine at University of San Tomas, however, his passion for protecting his community led him to pivot his career. At the age of 24 he became a sworn officer for the Manila Police Department, beginning his career by earning Rookie of the Year. He eventually became a decorated detective in Detective Bureau department where he spent most of his illustrious career. In 1986, he immigrated to the US with his family making stops in Stockton and San Francisco, before settling in Oakland, CA. In 1990 he was hired by the Oakland Police Department as a Police Service Technician, enjoying another long career in Law Enforcement, retiring in 2010.
He was united in holy matrimony to Rebecca Japitenga Pugao in 1975. This union was blessed with 3 children. “Pugaobaby” was President of Manila’s Finest, Sergeant at Arms for FAMES (Filipino American Employees Society), an active member of the Friends Forever group and the Bay Area Radio Club. His larger-than-life personality: the warmth of his character, daring persona and captivating charisma, has pierced the hearts of many. His influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew him, experienced his energy, laughed at his jokes, or shared his grand ideas. Mr. Pugao lived a wealthy life filled with love, adventure, laughter, and joy. His fighting spirit endured until the very end of his glorious life, which he departed on Monday May 31, 2021, at East Bay Post-Acute Healthcare Center in Castro Valley, California.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Constantino P. Abatayo, Leonardo A. Pugao, Restituo A. Pugao, Miguel A. Abatayo and sister Esperanza P. Tambuyat
His Beautiful life will forever be treasured in the lives of his loving wife, Rebecca Japitenga Pugao; his children: James Jeremy M. Pugao, Jeffrey Jerome M. Pugao, Jelly John M. Pugao, Joana Jingle M. Pugao, Andrea Pugao, Jay Jasper J. Pugao, Jay-Ar Isagani J. Pugao, Jonathan Jason J. Pugao, Andrea Ono; daughter-in-law: Jennie Tran-Pugao, May Mendoza; Twenty-five grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; sister, Salome Pugao and brother Milquiades A. Pugao; sister-in-law, Aurora J. Sirvain; Nieces and Nephews; godchildren; and devoted family friends.
