Harold Marshall Cole

September 9, 1927 ~ June 1, 2022 (age 94)

Tribute

Harold Marshall “Jack” Cole, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, in Walnut Creek, CA.  He was 94.

Jack was born in Peoria, IL on September 9, 1927 and raised by his mom and step-dad, Elsie and James Nicol in Excelsior Springs, MO.  Dad loved to laugh and loved to entertain us with stories of his youth:  delivering papers in the freezing MO winters, sneaking into the movies and ‘hiding’ between two seated adults so he wouldn’t get caught and working as a bellhop at the fashionable Elms Resort and Spa, a playground for the wealthy during the 1930s and post-prohibition era.

In 1945 he joined the Navy and raved about his time spent in the warm weather of San Diego, CA while in boot camp.

After discharge, he eventually made his way to Berkeley, CA, and experimented with a number of different professions, until a mutual friend introduced him to his future wife, Gloria Schmidt, and he had to settle down.  They were married on December 16, 1956 in Las Vegas, NV.  Jack received his business degree from Armstrong College of Berkeley in 1960.  Their first daughter Francene was born in 1964 followed by their second daughter Michelle in 1966.

Jack spent most of his career working in construction and utilized those skills to oversee the design and build of the family’s home in Moraga, CA - one of his proudest accomplishments.

Dad was a ‘jack’ of all trades and liked to dabble in a number of hobbies:  photography, scuba-diving, jewelry making.  He was always on to the next thing but nothing was more important to him than his family.  He adored his wife and loved his girls and made many sacrifices to provide them with opportunities he never had.

Jack is survived by his daughter Francene Cole of New York City, daughter Michelle Walton of Walnut Creek, CA, son-in-law Michael Walton and grand-children Lauren Walton, Lindsey Walton, and Cole Walton.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria.

He always said our family had a great story to tell.  Thanks Dad, for being a great father and helping fill the pages of our lives with beautiful memories!
